Director's Statement:.
Although in the past few years there has been plenty of attention focused on childhood sexual abuse, there has been little attention paid to the residual effects of that abuse. Many sexual abuse survivors suffer in shame and silence without the knowledge or resources they need to live a fully realized life. Some of the residual effects can be emotionally and physically devastating. Many abuse survivors suffer from depression. Many end up with alcohol, drug, or other addictions. Many end up in the sex industry or in prison. Many suffer from eating disorders or other self destructive behaviour. Many are stuck in unfulfilling or abusive relationships. One thing is certain; the effects of sexual abuse on a child do not disappear like magic when that child reaches eighteen. The impact continues, not only on that person but, on their family, friends, partners, and children. My reason for creating Locked is simple -- it is a call of hope for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. -- You are not alone. There is help available. You can heal. As a filmmaker I have been influenced by the emotional bravery of many of the Danish directors: Susanne Bier, Per Fly, Anders Thomas Jensen, Lone Scherfig among others. I've learned from the aesthetic beauty and often unconventional story structure of many Pacific Rim directors: Hou Hsia-hsien, Xiang Yimou, Anh Hung Tran, Pen-Ek Ratanaruang, among others. And I've been further influenced by many more for their willingness to experiment and their commitment to their personal vision. Among them I would count Jacques Demy, Hal Hartley, Frederico Fellini, and Terrence Malick. -- juli c. lasselle |
